Uncover the Soul of Afro-Ecuador: Tour Cultural Afro Mascarilla – Art, History & Living Traditions

🎭 Dive into a unique journey with the Tour Cultural Afro Mascarilla, exploring the rich history, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit of the Afro-descendant community of Mascarilla. Nestled between the Chota and Mira river basins, Mascarilla is the first Afro community you encounter upon entering Carchi province. This community’s story is one of resilience and strength—surviving the harsh legacy of slavery and building a powerful heritage of freedom, culture, and art.
🎭
The tour begins at 8:00 AM with a pick-up from your hotel or accommodation, followed by a scenic 1 hour and 30-minute drive to Mascarilla. Upon arrival, Betty, a proud Afro-descendant woman and leader of several community projects, will welcome you and guide you throughout the Tour Cultural Afro Mascarilla.

🎭

Your day starts with a hands-on workshop where you will learn the traditional craft of making clay masks—powerful symbols of identity and cultural expression. Step by step, you’ll create your own mask, tapping into the ancestral creativity that pulses through this vibrant community. This is one of the most memorable and meaningful parts of the Tour Cultural Afro Mascarilla.

🎭

Next, visit a local goat farm where you can participate in milking and discover how fresh goat milk is transformed into artisanal products like goat wine, manjar, and other delicacies that support the community’s economy. This agro-productive experience is a vital part of the Tour.

🎭

The tour continues with a stroll through family gardens growing native crops, showcasing the land’s richness and the sustainable work of the locals. If time permits, you’ll meet local producers and learn about their agroecological practices, rounding out a full and enriching day in the Tour.

🎭

More than a visit, this tour is a transformative experience celebrating Afro-Ecuadorian resistance, community empowerment, and a deep connection to the land and traditions. Perfect for travelers seeking authentic, responsible cultural tourism.
