Piñán Hike and Ride: Andean Adventure Through Páramo and Cloud Forest

Day 1: OTAVALO – EL CHURO – PIÑÁN

Our adventure begins early at 7:30 AM as we depart from our accommodation in Otavalo, Cotacachi, or from the home of a host family. A two-hour drive takes us to the highlands of El Churo, located at approximately 3,500 meters above sea level. Here, we begin our thrilling Piñán Hike and Ride experience, starting with a scenic mountain biking journey through the stunning Andean páramo landscapes.

This cycling route covers 45 kilometers of undulating paths, offering breathtaking views and fresh mountain air. Along the way, we’ll pause by the Pantavi River to enjoy a delicious box lunch. With some luck, we may spot local wildlife, including condors, eagles, hawks, rabbits, and small endemic birds.

In the afternoon, we arrive at the enchanting community of Piñán, where time seems to stand still and ancestral traditions live on. You’ll have free time to explore the village, meet its warm and welcoming inhabitants, and immerse yourself in their unique way of life. As evening falls, we set up our tents under a starry sky. Alternatively, guests can choose to stay in a cozy community cabin for an extra fee. At 7:00 PM, we gather for a traditional dinner at the communal dining hall, surrounded by genuine hospitality.

Day 2: BAJOS DE PIÑÁN – INTAG – OTAVALO

After a hearty breakfast at 8:00 AM, we begin the second day of our Piñán Hike and Ride with a 5–6 hour trek. We first ascend for two hours to the beautiful Piñán Lagoon—an ideal spot to rest and take photos. The trail then descends into the cloud forest, where native orchids, towering trees, and lush flora accompany us, while our guide shares fascinating insights into the local biodiversity.

We end our Piñán Hike and Ride in El Rosario, a subtropical village in the Intag region. There, our vehicle awaits to take us to Nangulví, where we’ll enjoy lunch and relax in soothing hot springs before returning to Otavalo.

Note: Cabin accommodation supplement, $15 per person. End of services.
