Piñán Hike and Horseback Ride
Piñán Hike and Horseback Ride – A Two-Day Escape
Day 1: Otavalo – Yana Urko – Piñán
Our adventure begins at 7:30 a.m., departing from Otavalo, Cotacachi, or from a local host family’s home. We take a scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive to Yana Urko, located around 3,300 meters above sea level. Here, the unforgettable Piñán Hike and Horseback journey begins—a 4 to 5-hour horseback ride through breathtaking Andean landscapes.
As we ride, we cross the Pantavi River, we have the posibility we see for wildlife like condors, eagles, hawks, rabbits, and small native birds. Arriving at the enchanting community of Piñán, we enjoy a traditional lunch lovingly prepared by the locals.
After lunch, there’s free time to explore the community, learn about its rich history, ancestral culture, and the harmony with which its people live. In the afternoon, we set up our tents to spend the night under the stars. Alternatively, guests can stay in the community cabin for an additional fee. At 7:00 p.m., we share a warm, hearty dinner in the cozy communal dining hall, surrounded by hospitality and friendly faces.
Day 2: Piñán – Lagoon – Intag – Otavalo
We start the day at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast in the community dining area. Then, the Piñán Hike and Horseback continues on foot with a 5 to 6-hour hike. We ascend for about two hours until we reach the stunning Piñán Lagoon—a perfect spot for photos and to soak in the spectacular scenery.
The trail then descends through cloud forest, where our guide points out giant trees, orchids, bromeliads, and other native plants. Eventually, we arrive at the village of El Rosario in the subtropical Intag region. From there, our vehicle awaits to take us to Nangulví’s thermal springs, where we relax and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, we return to Otavalo, concluding an unforgettable journey blending nature, culture, and adventure.
