Acclimatization in Imbabura Program
Path to the Heights: Acclimatization in Imbabura 3 days / 2 night
The Acclimatization in Imbabura Program offers an immersive experience for those seeking to adapt to high altitudes while exploring the rich cultural and natural heritage of Ecuador’s Imbabura province. This 3-day itinerary combines scenic hikes, cultural exchanges, and challenging ascents, providing an ideal preparation for higher-altitude endeavors.
Day 1: Cuicocha Lagoon – Cotacachi – La Calera
After a hearty breakfast, we journey to the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve, situated at 3,100 meters above sea level. Here, we embark on a 12-kilometer hike around the stunning Cuicocha Lagoon, a 4.5-hour trek offering panoramic views of volcanoes like Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Imbabura, and the revered Mama Cotacachi. Our guide will share insights into Andean cosmology, medicinal plants, and local economic practices.
Post-hike, we enjoy lunch in Cotacachi and explore its renowned leather workshops. In the afternoon, we proceed to La Calera community, where we’ll stay with a local family. Engaging in daily activities such as animal care, harvesting, and cooking, we experience authentic cultural immersion. The day concludes with a traditional dinner and restful night in comfortable private rooms.
Day 2: Mojanda Lakes – Fuya Fuya Ascent – Otavalo
Following breakfast, we head to the Mojanda Lakes at 3,700 meters. Our guide narrates local legends and details about the area. We then undertake a 2-kilometer ascent to Fuya Fuya’s summit at 4,260 meters, a 2-hour climb rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Andean landscape.
Descending the same path, we travel to Otavalo for lunch and a visit to the famous Plaza de Ponchos market. Returning to La Calera, we take a short village walk, share dinner with our host family, and rest for the night.
Day 3: Imbabura Volcano Ascent
At 4:30 AM, we depart for Cashapamba (3,400 meters), the starting point for our ascent of Imbabura Volcano. As dawn breaks, we begin the 5-kilometer hike, a 4-hour journey to the summit at 4,640 meters. On clear days, the peak offers views of major cities in the province, including Cotacachi, Ibarra, and Otavalo. The descent takes approximately 3 hours, culminating in a celebratory lunch in the city. This marks the end of the Acclimatization in Imbabura Program, leaving participants enriched by nature, culture, and personal achievement.
